Health and Safety Awareness Training for School Staff

This training seeks to convey to all school employees especially teachers the consciousness, knowledge and skills required to provide safe spaces for children in their care. Training is tailored to the school’s mode of operation.

Topics covered include:
• - Fundamentals of School Safety
• - Safeguarding and Child Protection
• - Emergency Preparedness and Response Planning
• - Infection Prevention and Control
• - Administration of Medication
• - School Transportation Safety
• - Bullying
• - School Safety for Students with Special Needs
• - Childproofing classrooms and learning spaces (For early-years)
• - Safe sleep and feeding practices (For early-years)
• - Drug Abuse (For secondary schools)

By the end of the course, participants should be able to:

• ▪ Define their role in creating safe spaces for children.
• ▪ Identify the warning signs of child abuse and neglect.
• ▪ Know what to do in an emergency.
• ▪ Develop safety management systems and emergency response plans.
• ▪ Provide safe and inclusive environments for children with special needs.

This training session is usually for 8 hours inclusive of a 45 minutes break. Classes are highly interactive with case studies and assessments.

Emergency Preparedness and Response Planning Training for School Administrators

This training equips school leaders with knowledge and skill required to be prepared to deal with emergencies and manage disasters effectively in schools. The course considers the four phases of emergency management: Prevention and Mitigation, Emergency Response Planning, Response to Emergencies and Recovery. Course attendants will learn how to conduct risk/vulnerability assessment, decide on effective risk mitigation strategies and develop response procedures for different emergency procedures. Vulnerability assessment, risk mitigation strategies and ERPs will be centred on for the following scenarios: fire, explosion, riot/terrorist activities, stampedes, release of toxic substances such as tear gas, flood and disease outbreak. The course also covers Business Continuity Planning.

After successful completion of the training, each participant should be able to:
• - Conduct hazard and vulnerability assessment to identify emergencies their schools are susceptible to.
• - Develop a tailored emergency preparedness & response plan to address findings from the hazard assessment.
• - Prepare all members of their school communities to respond in emergencies according to plan.
• - Review and update emergency preparedness and response plan as need arises.
• - Develop a Business Continuity Plan.

This session is usually for 4 hours exclusive. Classes are highly interactive with case studies and assessments.

Health & Safety Audits and Consultations

Let us pay a visit to your school to identify hazards or unsafe practices that pose risks to your students, staff and visitors; check for absence of safety standards; compare existing safety system to best practice standard and develop a safety management system tailored to the specific needs of your school.

Our health and safety audits / consultations involve the following activities:
• - Reviewing the school’s health and safety documentation and procedures.
• - Physical inspection of the school’s premises and immediate surroundings.
• - Assessing health and safety knowledge of the school community with focus on staff.
• - Observing school activities to ensure safety procedures are followed.
• - Conducting Emergency drills.
• - Developing an audit report .
• - Developing a school safety plan.
• - Certification / Accreditation by the World Safety Organisation Nigeria.

The deliverables for health and safety audits and consultations include:

• - A concise report stating outcomes of the audit would be submitted to the school. The report serves to highlight strengths and describe weaknesses in the school’s safety management system and recommends solutions and timeframes for resolutions where deficiencies and issues are identified.
• - School Safety Plan will be developed or updated (if the school has an existing safety management system).
• - WSO Certification.
1. If cleared by the audit, the school will be accredited (which should be renewed biannually) by the WSO Nigeria.
